The summer before my junior year, I worked with Dr. Stephanie Gillespie on a grant proposal through the Hugo Mentors Program. Focused on uncovering the cellular manifestations and CRISPR treatment for the mutation in the FLNC gene at point C1948>T, I found a unique joy from the scientific processes that I have yet to discover elsewhere. This project was particularly poignant to me, though, because the mutation I proposed to correct I carry and is responsible for my mother’s dilated cardiomyopathy.
